Rwanda is a small country – and it packs a punch. Before crossing the border, the country was a blank slate in my mind – I had no idea what to expect of the landscape or the people, though it’s infamous history was certainly front of mind. The genocide in 1994 was not that long ago – nearly everyone we met had gone through the deepest nightmare anyone can imagine. And yet, Rwanda today is a rare economic, social and peaceful success story. To uncover how it got to where it is now would take years, but our short trip across the country revealed lush hills, litter-free roadways and friendly locals – a great stopover in a pan-Africa trip.
